Maintenance and cleaning of carpets can be carried out using two main technologies:

Carpet cleaning is a process of superficial, usually one-sided, physical and chemical treatment aimed at removing dirt. Due to the superficial nature of cleaning, the depth of cleaning and penetration into the structure of the product of the main means for cleaning factors is not great, and it is generally accepted that during cleaning, dirt is removed from the surface or from a small depth below the surface.

Cleaning can be dry-mechanical, for example – with a vacuum cleaner, anhydrous – with the use of solvents that do not contain water, with the use of powder sorbents, and wet, with different degrees of humidity – from light moistening from a sprayer and collection with an absorbent material (bonnet-cleaning), to cleaning by the method of extraction with abundant pre-wetting.

Carpet washing is a process of end-to-end treatment of carpets with full immersion in a washing solution, abundant washing of the product with water and subsequent wringing or vacuuming of the liquid from the product.

Carpet cleaning can be carried out both in the conditions of a specialized workshop and at the place of their operation.

Carpets are washed only in specially prepared conditions, preferably in a specialized shop.

Chemicals used for washing carpets are usually called shampoos due to the fact that their solutions are prone to abundant foam formation.

Chemistry for cleaning carpets, usually the description contains what kind of cleaning it is used for. Shampoos can also be among such preparations, but there are also extraction agents, the powder sorbents mentioned above, and special solvents for cleaning carpets.
